For Fatherβs Day this past weekend, one treat I got was to participate in an adult volleyball clinic put on by a very fun, energetic and athletic crew, including professional and D1 collegiate volleyball players (shout-out to OOS).
In any sport, to see people playing at the collegiate level is amazing. They can do things with their craft that are on a different level from every other human on the planet. Professionals take it to another stratosphere. Truly mind-boggling stuff.
In volleyball, βout of systemβ (OOS) refers to a team being out of sync, or out of their designed formation. On offense, your goal is to get the opposing team OOS, so they are not as effective against you.
On the flip side, and what I find most interesting, is what happens to your team when you find yourself OOS.
It is estimated that at the collegiate level, teams are OOS 30% to 50% of the time! So, nearly half the time, teams are playing OOS! For this reason, the best teams train over and over and over again how to handle themselves when they are OOS.
What an amazing analogy for investing.
When we build an investment portfolio, we have expectations on how well it might perform. Then, a war happens. A pandemic occurs. A new law or policy is announced out of nowhere. What do we do then? How do we react?
How we react has the potential to set our savings backward years or decades.
Our plan MUST come with the expectation that our portfolio will be pushed OOS at times, and we should be prepared to navigate through it.
Invest intentionally out there!
